Pore Filler or Color Correcting Primer?
I am grateful for having a good skin that doesn't have much problem other than occasional breakout during that time of the month and some oils around the T-zone, so I thought moisturizer would be enough as the base of my make up. But the more I watch make up tutorials, and read beauty reviews, I'm getting more and more curious about how primer will work on me. So on this post, I'm gonna talk about two primers that I have tried up to this day.
First up is Tony Moly Face Mix Skin Make Up Base. The first primer that I bought. It was an impulsive buy when I took a visit on Tony Moly counter with my mom, because we love their skin care and make up, and they always have up to 70% sale on selected products. I love how this green primer just glides on on to the skin, it evens out my skin tone, a little goes a long way, and although it doesn't work as a pore filler, it makes my skin look smoother and better whether I just use it on it's own or under my foundation. Like most of Korean products, this is also more on the moisturizing, makes your skin look more glowy and healthy type of primer without making my skin look too oily. I could say that this primer prolongs the wear of my make up as well, because I used this on my graduation day where it was hot and sweaty, yet my foundation remained in place for hours.
And the other one is Monistat Chafing Relief Powder Gel, the popular gel among all the bloggers because it is said to be the dupe for Smashbox Photo Primer. I do have big pores around my cheeks and nose, but I don't see a big difference when I have this primer on. I like the soft and velvety feel of this primer on the skin, the slightly mattifying effect, and how it helps foundation applies easier on top of this. But I don't think it makes the foundation really stick to it. It has no oil control, so I still get oily after an hour or two around my nose where my foundation tends to disappear quickly too because it just melts along with my oils, if that make sense. So, another rave product that doesn't suit me. Maybe if I have normal to dry skin it will perform much better.
I don't use make up everyday, so these primer doesn't get used often but between these two, Tony Moly Face Mix Skin Make Up Base is the one that I use the most. As much as I want to try other primers in the drugstore range such as ELF, City Color, and LA Girl, I don't think I'm gonna buy new primer anytime soon. But if you have any recommendations of your favorite drugstore primer, I'd be happy to note that on my wishlist. Thank you so much for reading :)

Wow I've never heard of an anti-chafing gel working as a primer - that's amazing xx
ReplyDeleteKathleen lights actually used it too in her old videos, that's why I thought it must be good. Now I'm curious to try after shave cream as primer, like Nikkie Tutorials does!
DeleteGreat comparison post :) I have never used either product, but of the two, I would say the Tony Moly one would be the one I would go for :) xx

yes, I'd recommend you the Tony Moly as well! Thank you Brenda :D
DeleteThis is a great post Sitha! I use the benefit Porefessional which is suppose to be pore filling. I don't know if it does that but it's one of the only primers that doesn't irritate my skin so I keep using it. I tend to like more cream primers than the gel/silicone ones because those make me break out. I should try a color correction one like you've mentioned! I wish I had a good drugstore one, I've wanted to try the Elf ones but my skins so sensitive to them so I've been scared lol!
ReplyDeleteisn't the porefessional silicone too? but if works for you then it must be amazing. it's what I'm worried about silicone primer too, I'm afraid it might break me out. I think you will like the Tony Moly one, it is a cream primer, so less chance for break out :)
Deleteof I used to have sensitive skin too during puberty, nothing ever worked for me, so once I found something that worked, I was just like you, sticking to what I have known! haha
I rarely use primer due to my dry skin, makeup tends to stay on forever on me. Recently I do try to use Benefit Porefessional which I received from a beauty subscription because it's been sitting there for months and my pores are getting larger due to my age. A drugstore primer that I have read lots of good things on is NYX Angel Veil, I'm planning to pick it up (if I remember!) and maybe do a review on it.

yes! I heard some good things about thrle angel veil primer, but it's expensive in here it's not like drugstore anymore :(
DeleteBut I'd love to read your review, I think it'll work for your dry skin
I've never tried any of these primers, but I heard a lot of good things about Monistat gel. :) Shame that it hasn't worked out for you - my skin gets really oily, so I'd definitely need something that helps my complexion stay matte throughout the day. x Atm, I'm enjoying the Benefit's Porefessional primer and the Fix & Perfect primer by Rimmel. <3

DeleteAku pakai monistatnya. Sebenarnya dia gak pantes disebut primer, cuman memang dia ampuh bikin muka terlihat gak oily, TERLIHAT AJA YA, bukan yang beneran gak oily, dan harusnya sih gak diolesin foundation lagi, karena dia kan seperti nempel di kulit, seperti balsem lah istilahnya, kalau digores lagi pakai foundation ya buyar hahaha...
ReplyDeleteTapi kalau tanpa foundation, aku suka banget ini! Gak breakout juga di aku, lovely lah~ Jadi kalau mau terlihat bebas kilap ya ini, dengan catatan tangannya gak iseng pegang2 muka soalnya gak enak banget diraba hahaha (itu berarti no pegang2 ya wahai pacar hahaha)

hahaha masa sih sampe segitunya? muka ku ga ada di pegang2 sih apalagi kalo udah pake make up, takut dandanannya buyar lah kalo di pegang2 :P
DeleteKalau aku mah udah pasti pegang2, apalagi main sama anak, kesenggol lah, kecolek lah hahaha
Deletehaha yah kalo judulnya udah main sama anak pasti susah ya mbak, namanya juga anak-anak :D
DeleteBy the way, I tagged you in my favourite bloggers post, hope that's okay. =) <3

I hope monistat will work out for you! it's just because I have oily skin, it just slipped away on me haha
DeleteI love primers but haven't heard of anti chaffing. Sounds great for winter!
ReplyDeleteYeah, I think it will be perfect for winter :)
DeleteI don't use primer on a daily basis, but one I quite like is the Make up For Ever Step1 Skin Equalizer Mattifying Primer. It's not drugstore though...
ReplyDeletehttp://carolinapage.eu
I used be a primer addict but recently I've found not using any makes my makeup last longer.. weird. I do like a pore filling primer for special occasions though!
